 Internships are an important element in the growth of young professionals, and WHYY offers a variety of unpaid, meaningful, learning opportunities and on-the-job training experiences for junior and senior year undergraduates, and graduate and postgraduate students (within two years of graduation). Experiences range from production and newsroom opportunities across all media platforms of the region's most important public broadcasting company, to public relations, branding & promotions and other administrative departments within WHYY.
WHYY Internships provide valuable and practical hands on experience, supervised by award-winning professionals. Interns maintain a working portfolio of their projects demonstrating progress throughout the semester, and will receive end of term review and career guidance. College credit may be granted, dependant upon previous arrangements with the student's particular college.

How to Apply

- A two-three page writing sample or tear-sheets if published

- A letter of recommendation from an individual who can speak to your relevant work experience, background, skills or work ethic. Letter must be received in a sealed envelope with the signature of the individual providing the reference across the flap.
- Applicants from non-native English speaking countries must provide proof of English speaking and writing competence through TOEFL minimum scores of 600PBT, 200CBT, or 100IBT.

WHYY Children's Service encompasses TV and radio programming, community outreach workshops, educational print materials, online services, and special events. Intern has the opportunity to help develop children's outreach workshops, assist with In the Spirit of Family panel discussion series, conduct research on teacher professional development and other educational topics, and assist with various public events.
A great opportunity for a Business Administration or Communications major to gain experience in all aspects of event-planning and promotion. This internship will assist in the creation and execution of events, drafting grant proposals, and assisting the Community Relations team in various administrative tasks. A good candidate must have excellent verbal, written, organizational skills, the ability to take initiative and problem solve, and be available to work some weekend events.
A great opportunity for a Business Administration student to help detail the Member & Audience Services Department's entire set of processes and procedures. The candidate should have knowledge of process mapping, strong writing and interpersonal skills, and experience using Visio, Word, and Excel to create an accurate and detailed depiction of department procedures. Candidate also has the opportunity to make suggestions for improvement in both current and future processes.
WHYY seeks an accounting and/or finance student who has a good working knowledge of MS Excel. Duties include updating financial schedules, preparing journal entries, reconciling bank statements, analyzing general ledger account balances, and assisting other department members on special projects.
Experience all aspects of working with high-level donors in major gifts department. Administer appeals, manage data entry, conduct prospect research, and assist at special events. Must be computer proficient, with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Access.
The Graphic Design Internship will give a student a unique opportunity to assist in the everyday operations of an in-house design department. The intern will work with WHYY's Graphic and Multimedia Designer developing print products such as event invitations, signage, newspaper ads, web graphics, marketing and event collateral, and other day-to-day tasks. Candidate must be a multi-tasker, able to work well in a fast-paced, team environment, and able to work on a project from concept to completion. Proficiency in Mac platform, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator required. Print production as well as web graphic knowledge preferred. A unique opportunity available for an individual interested in obtaining hands-on HR experience. Responsibilities include assisting staff with their administrative, recruitment, benefits, and training needs.
It's Our City is looking for a spring intern who is able to help out two to four days a week from noon-5pm. Candidates must be very interested in local Philadelphia government and politics. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with WHYY's civic engagement website that tracks local government actions, but also encourages citizen involvement to ensure elected officials remain accountable to the public. Key duties will include: researching local government and laws, making calls to city and community leaders, and writing blog posts. The ideal candidate is someone who would one day like to become involved in government, politics, or community activism. This internship will give a student a close up look at the inner workings of big city government through an award-winning multi-platform media environment.
Assist marketing team in all aspects of promoting WHYY — from TV12, to 91FM, to print campaigns, and so much more. Candidates must have excellent organizational skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and good written and verbal communication skills. Experience on school newspaper or magazine will be very helpful.
Assist WHYY's Membership team with execution and maintenance of fundraising and marketing initiatives. Candidate will assist in creating marketing materials for fundraising initiatives, administering campaigns, researching prospects, attending member events, assisting with on-air pledge drives, and creating member relations communications across a variety of media including print, broadcast and e-communications. Strong writing and interpersonal skills are required, along with a strong knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft programs. Attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision are a must.
Production Assistant will work with on-air film critic Patrick Stoner on various tasks related to Flicks and Quick Picks shows. Duties include transferring video, logging and summarizing tapes, cataloging interviews, and assisting with other projects. Background in television or communications preferred. Candidate will work two full days per week at WHYY's Delaware Broadcast Center in Wilmington, DE.
Intern will assist WHYY's Senior Publicists with writing press releases and pieces for WHYY's company newsletter, updating mailing lists and press clips, assisting with special events and promotional activities, and assisting organizing and maintaining TV12 and 91FM program files and weekly press mailings. Strong writing and organizational skills required.
Radio Times is a local public affairs program produced by WHYY-FM. Intern will assist staff with radio production duties and with library research related to upcoming interview guests.
Assist WHYY-TV's Delaware Tonight news and editorial staff in daily news planning and organization: present ideas for stories, conduct interviews, write scripts for broadcast, gather field video and sound for air, assemble stories; assist with live daily broadcast: collate scripts, operate teleprompter, prepare anchor for interviews; assist in miscellaneous clerical duties. Candidate will work two full days per week at WHYY's Delaware Broadcast Center in Wilmington.
WHYY's psychology call-in program seeks interns interested in mental health, psychology, and/or communications. Responsibilities include researching background material, contacting potential guests and callers for the show, and general administrative and production duties.
An excellent opportunity for journalism majors who are looking to expand their new media credentials. This intern reports to WHYY's Senior Producer of Web News and Information. The intern produces feature length stories that can include video, still photo, audio and print elements for WHYY's News and Information website. Candidates must be self-starters who requires little direct oversight and have intense interest in sniffing out the stories that don't often get told in Philadelphia's current commercial media landscape. The intern will be responsible for bringing a story from the concept stage to the final product. Experience with Mac platform, Final Cut, and videography is preferred; strong writing, storytelling, and communication skills are required. Knowledge of Flash and graphic design are a plus but not required. Time commitment and schedule are flexible; depending on equipment available off-site, work from home/school will be considered.
Assist WHYY-TV production staff with library research and related duties for assigned productions/series; assisting with operating character generator/teleprompter; logging tapes; typing and filing scripts; and assisting with general office tasks as assigned. Candidate will work two full days per week at WHYY's Delaware Broadcast Center in Wilmington.
Assisting reporters with writing broadcast copy; attending and covering press conferences; answering phone calls and monitoring wires for breaking news; handling phone calls and setting up interviews and gathering research material and sound for broadcast. Requires excellent writing and computer skills. Some training in journalism and/or radio/TV is essential.
Wider Horizons addresses the needs and interests of those looking at the second half of life: new retirees, active elders, children of aging parents and baby boomers looking ahead, with an emphasis on creative eldering and caregiving. This internship involves developing resources for the web and for print, and researching and compiling information on health and community resources and events for a regional Resource Guide. Good writing skills, ability to conduct internet research, and phone skills for following up with WHYY's community partners required. WHYY will train in database use.
